So this is it, my name is Naufal of 3e2 and I went to Marina Square to accomplish my mission, to find a food that fits perfectly in the picture of this year's Racial Harmony theme: Know your Neighbours. As you might or might not know, I have taken a picture of Kaya Toast. These kaya toast are from Killiney Kopitiam.
I chose the humble Kaya Toast as an ambassador to this year's Racial Harmony theme because it came from a simple yet harmonious origin.
Kaya Toast came about from Malaysia. Kaya was a very popular jam at that time and even now it is a favourite among Malaysians and Singaporeans. So how did Singaporean taste this humble delicacy from the Malaysians? Well, back then people were poor. Usually they only eat bread and rice to fill their stomach for the whole day. Therefore, they decided to use kaya, a cocunut and sugar jam, and spread it on bread. And it turns out delicious.
They also decided to toast the bread to make it crispier and even add butter to enhance the flavour. This breakfast snack spreads throughout Malaysia fast. It makes its way to Singapore as one of the founders decide to invest on the snack on this island. It turns out to be a big hit.
This is the base origin of how kaya toast was made according to my understanding. As I munched on the crispy and sweet snack, it taste delicious. The bread was toasted to perfection allowing it to sustain its crispiness till the last bite. The sweet kaya was abundantly spread on the toast with a slice of butter which seems to melt due to the heat of the fresh toast. It is preferably served with hot tea or coffee. The meal was very light yet tasty enough to fulfill your sweet tooth. The best thing is that it only cost you $1.70 for two slice of kaya toast
Ya Kun Kaya Toast is famous for its Kaya toast and has become a household name while Killiney Kopitiam is a runner-up to the famous Ya Kun Kaya Toast. These two shops are very popular among people especially office workers. One of the reason is that they wish to get the nostalgia of the olden days where time seems slow as people takes life easy. It has since spawn many different version such as Cracker kaya toast( Biscuit kaya toast) and French Toast (Bread dip in eggs with kaya spread on it.
The significant of this dish is that it strengthen the binds of Singaporeans as everybody enjoys this dish, from the old to the young. Furthermore knowing this meals' origin is knowing our neighbours as Kaya Toast came from Malaysia and we made it famous here in our homeland Singapore. Thank you and be sure to savour this light delicacy.
