Cuppy Cake!

27 July 2009
Hi everyone,I am Janessa from class 3n2.
For this assignment,I have chosen a dish from a stall in Kou Fu,located at Toa Payoh Central selling Thailand food.
It's stall name is 'Kor Thai Delights'.
Just a little information about lemon grass before I start my review on lemon grass with beef rice set:
Related to citronella, this bulbous, greyish green tropical grass is a favored herb in Southeast Asian cuisines, where its delicate, lemony essence permeates a wide assortment of dishes. In Thai cooking, lemongrass is used most frequently to flavor soups, salads and curries.

We all know that Thailand stuffs are getting popular in Singapore,so why not have a taste of Thailand food to see what their food has to offer to your taste-buds?
Due to time constraints,I had to buy the food home to sample and I hope you won't mind the not so attractive pictures,as because it was packed, the presentation does not look oh-so-yummy.
Yet,I strongly recommend this stall for it's Lemon Grass Beef with rice set.

Both me and my mother have never been big fans of beef.
Yet,the moment I sunk my teeth in to the nice-smelling beef,I immediately asked my mother to try some because it was really very tasty.
My mother has always been skeptical about my decisions and views, but this time she agreed with me head on.
For it's $4.50 price for both a decent portion of delicious beef, lemon grass, leafy vegetables, cucumber, some carrots and a bowl of rice,it really deserves a try, especially for those who have not tried thailand food before.
It will sure give you a good impression on Thai food, especially for people like me who are non-spicy eaters as the food is not spicy, with maybe just a slight hint of pepper/spicyness which is withstandable for people who cannot take spicyness alike.
There are bits of chilli in the dish but no worries, the chilli seeds have already been taken out and just only add a slight flavour (:
I personally give it a thumbs up and a rating of 4/5.
And did I mention? It was one of the cheapest sets from that stall.
What's not to try? No harm done and in the meanwhile, exploring another culture's food.(:

Soy Sauce Chicken Noodles!

(Click on the thumbnail to enlarge the photo. I dont know why I cant seem to upload pictures to blogger. I apologise for this.)

Hey everyone. I'm Marcus from 3E2. On Saturday the 24th of July, I went to Chinatown to try out food. It was difficult because Chinatown has a long list of good food. So, I took my time and walk around. Just then, I stopped at this shop. The shop does not look bright or colourful but this chicken that is hanging in the display looks so mouth-watering! I was welcomed by the lady there. I sat down and soon ordered a drink while waiting. In less than 3 minutes, my dish arrived. SOY SAUCE CHICKEN NOODLES! It serves quite a reasonable amount. There was the braised chicken and the noodles served with cai sin (I apologise if I spelt wrongly), a little coriander leaf and some spring onion sprinkled on it. Then, I mixed everything together. The noodles were well cooked. The chicken is tender and there is no blood at all. There hardly is any bone in the chicken so I think it will be better as people are usually lazy to eat with the bone present.

Oh. Not to forget. The shop's name is "Chew Kee Eating House". It has a long history of 47 years! Really good huh? Well, this is one proof that the food there is delicious! That is why the shop is able to remain there till now, don't you agree? I cannot remember the address as I was walking aimlessly to look for some appetising food but if you would like to make your way there, walk further down from the exit of MRT and cross the road till you see Hotel 81. Just keep walking straight and find the signboard as stated. Enjoy your meal if you are there. I bet you want more!

Racial Harmony - Euwen

Hi, I'm Euwen from 3N1. As all the placers allocated to go was too far, i decided to go Ang Mo Kio Hub as it was nearby. As mentioned, i went to the food court at AMK Hub. I ate some Korean dish there.

From the left is Korean Mixed Rice and Korean BBQ Chicken ; Both of the meals costed $5.00
Each. But i only ate the Korean BBQ Chicken. The chicken is tender, not salty, the oil was also reduced by using the vegetable leafs and it also gives a melting effect when u put it into your mouth.
<- Picture of how the vegetables leaf was used to reduce amount of oil.

The bowl of rice was really different from our normal rice, the rice tasted dry and sticky ; Had a hard time trying to swallow too. The soup was plain, oily and did'nt taste well. But when eating all this with the Ikan Bilis and the Kimchi, it was delicious.
This event allowed my to know more about Korean Delights. I would say that if you ask for my judgement on this meal, overall of 10, I would give a 7/10.

<- Heres a picture of how the Kimchi looks like

Assignment- Khairulanwar

Hi, I'm Khairulanwar from 3N2. I did my F&N work as told. I went to Toa Payoh lorong 8 market to eat Mee Soto. It is originated from Indonesia. Mee Soto - the base for this dish is a stock made from chicken and a special Rempah(Spices), which varies from stall to stall. Blanched Hokkien Mee and pieces of shredded chicken are then drowned in this aromatic and tasty soup, and topped with chopped spring onions and crispy fried onions. It cost $2.50 per bowl. For the taste of dish, it is delicious, not salty, not oily and its good for health as it is not oily.

After I had eaten Mee Soto, I went to eat Prata. Roti prata is the Singaporean evolution of the Pakistani and Indian prata, a pancake bread made of dough composed of fat, egg, flour and water. Roti means bread in Hindi, Urdu, most other North Indian languages and Malay, while Prata means flat. It is traditionally served with curry or, more rarely, with sugar. I ate it at Toa Payoh Lor 1. The plain prata cost 2 for $ 1.20? It was really delicious when it is hot and it is nicer eating it with fish curry. There are many other types of prata such as egg, cheese, tissue and Bomb Prata.

The food that I eat was from my neighbourhood hawker centre.

Food Festival Assignment-Suraiin

Hi, I am suraiin from 3n2 and I am here to present you the mini wok noodle at marina square food court. The store name is fishball noodle and the mini wok noodle is origin from the Chinese cuisine. You can find the mini wok noodle any where in Singapore. The bowl of noodle comes with a small wok that is filled with soup and the wok is sitting over a little burner to keep it  piping hot and to poach the raw egg at the bottom of the wok. Even if it is a bit gimmicky, I like this soup because it is a perfect  complement to the greasy but tasty  noodles. Its clear why I love this dish with all of its fried pork lard, meatballs and mushrooms. Indeed, it looks like this is generally available from any noodle hawkers. But the soup is richer in taste thanks to all of the meat and such. This mini wok noodle cost $4.50 so I give this dish a rating of 7 out of 10 so I advice you if you are near toa payoh go for this dish It will make your taste bug go crazy.

This is nasi padang which I bought from marina square food court. Nasi padang is  originally from Sumatra, this simply describes rice served with a variety of dishes, many of them spicy. Nasi padang is made from basic ingredients such as kunyit, serai, santan and chilies, nasi padang is rather healthy. Nasi padang comes with a wide variety of dishes to go with but this nasi pandang is special because of the sambal. The sambal is very spicy and shiok and what is great with the dish is that it comes with a free soup for diners only, and the nasi padang cost $4.50 and it is rather cheap compare with other places. So I give this dish  a rating of 6 out of 10.

This is the grill fish with spaghetti, I bought this dish at marina square food court and out of the three dishes this is one of the best. I specially like the grill fish because the fish is so soft and  the sauce that  goes with the fish is call mushroom sauce this two is the best combination for the fish, as for the spaghetti, the noodle was soft and the sauce was just perfect for the spaghetti. You can also add other dish such as fries or mash potato but the quantity is little if you choose this two if want to make your money worth it you should choose the spaghetti and grilled fish. The dish also comes with the mushroom soup, I could really taste the mushroom flavor and it taste quite creamy so I give this dish a rating of 10 out of 10. this dish is to die for.

Hey there I’m shristi from 3E2.And as we all know Singapore is celebrating the food festival for racial harmony. This is the time to try out varieties of foods from different ethnic group of our neighboring countries of Singapore. Since I had a assignment to do I went to try thai food with my friends in marina square on Friday 23 july at the food court , I could not find the food that we wanted to eat so we decided to go thai express instead with dewi and hira. Thai Express is a chain of restaurants serving Thai cuisine in Singapore. The first restaurant was opened in Holland village in Singapore in May 2002 .Since then, there have been other outlets in Malaysia, Indonesia China, Australia, New Zealand and Mongolia. A restaurant review characterise Thai Express as breaking "away from the traditional Thai style of communal dining by serving items in individual portions for those who may want to dine alone." "In place of fine dining, which may be intimidating to some, Thai Express is all about being fresh, contemporary and fuss-free."The typical casual and mordern decor of the restaurant is glass partitions with wooden chairs of Scandinavian style design. A lot of dishes on the thai menu have already won awards and about 95% of the food that we order are basically cooked .As you can see in the picture it has a nice and comfortable environment and the staff their also were friendly. There is also a Buddha statue, which symbolizes Thailand. The manager told us that the purpose of the statue was to bring prosperity for the restaurant as well as to beautify the restaurant.

Without wasting any time we quickly ordered the Gai Phat Pet Ched Nam Ta (Bangkok chicken rice with special thai ginger chilli sauce) $9.90, they serve a portion of rice together with it so we had to order only 2 more rice for the three of us costing about $1.20. This dish most famous in Bangkok Thailand and many other parts of the world. It has attracted many tourists to try out this food as it has a very unique taste and a very well known dish. Before we confirmed our order, the waiter warned us on the spiciness of the dish. As I recall he had said, ‘many of the customers have cried before, upon trying the dish.’ To our surprise, tears welled up in our eyes as we took our first bite. But the food had a very aromatic smell of ginger, turmeric and not forgetting the HOT chilli. Since it was served hot, the taste of the chicken with the spiciness and ginger lingered in our tongue for hours after eating it. The chicken was very tender and juicy as well. (EXCELLENT FOOD TO TRY OUT WHICH CAN BLOW YOUR MIND).

The Thai Tom Yum Talay (Tom yum soup with seafood) $6.90.Whenever Thailand is mention nobody forgets the thai soup tom yum soup. Thai tom yum soup is perhaps one of the most famous dishes in Thai cuisine. It is widely served in neighboring countries such as Malaysia , Singapore and Indonesia and has been popularized around the world. Tom yum is characterized by its distinct hot and sour flavors, with fragrant herbs generously used. The food has great aroma of lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal shallots, lime juice, ginger and other fresh ingredients. There were seafood added also such as prawns, squid, fish and mushrooms too not forgetting it was topped with generous sprinkling of fresh chopped coriander so I quicky took snaps of it and started tasting it as I could not control anymore..The tom yum soup had such a great taste of sour and spiciness and it’s texture was orange and yellow which was really appetizing that we could not stop ourself from having it although it was really really spicy. The flavor was well grinded with the taste of all the seafood and the lemon grass and other herbs gave the special extra flavor to it. This is a special must try dish as its worth it and you can share with your friends and families

I think that it was worth trying out all of these as it was a complete meal for the three of us and it cost only a total of $ 19.80 including the GST of 10% $1.80 and it filled all of our stomach. I think the money was worth it for a restaurant as each of us had to pay just $6.60 each. So I would like to encourage those who like spicy flavor food and a good environment they should go try at the thai express in marina square at shopping mall and enjoy the real taste of spiciness of thai food. I will give the food rating of 8.5/10 as the food was good as well as the environment and the staffs there were friendly too.(WARNING THOSE WHO CAN’T TAKE SPICY FOOD PLEASE DON’T TRY IT IF NOT YOU WILL REGRET IT) hahas. But still I would like everyone to try thai food once in their life time may it be spicy or not. Thai food deserves to be tried….

Food Fest

Hello! I'm Nazihah from 3N2. Today, I went to the hawker centre located near my house to complete my F&N assignment. The photos above shown, I ate Laska. To define what laksa is, laska is a famous noodle soup from Peranakan culture also known as Baba and Nyonya, which is a merger of Chinese and Malay elements found in Malaysia and Singapore. Laksa exists in countless incarnations throughout the Malay Peninsula - Sarawak, Malacca, Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and of course Singapore, each have their own tasty version.

The stall sells dish which is commonly found is Malaysia and Singapore such as Mee Rebus, Lor Mee, Prawn Mee and Laksa. The laksa that they cooked was totally mouth-watering. The gravy
was terrific, I can taste the coconut milk, which adds a distinctive richness to a dish. Apart from that, cockles, fish cake, boiled egg and tofu puffs are also added to make the dish more scrumptious.

It cost $2.50 per bowl and they have other ranging of prices to choose from. The price is reasonable and there will be no regret after eating. Therefore, I choose laksa as my dish for my F&N assignment,- Theme: Know Your Neighbour, because I believe the origin of laksa is from Singapore and Malaysia which is also known as ASEAN.

Food Festivals Assignment By Kiat Soon

HI, I am Kiat Soon from 3n1. The above pictures which I went to The Central food court at Clarke Quay on 24 July, Friday. The store is Hainanese Chicken Rice, is a dish of chinese origin most commonly associated with Malaysian cuisine or Singaporean cuisine, although it is also commonly sold in neighbouring Thailand, found in Hainan, China itself.

The prevalance of stalls selling Hainanese chicken rice as their primary specialty in Singapore underscores the dish's unrivalled popularity amongst Singaporeans and overseas visitors. Hainanese chicken rice is often considered as the national dish of Singapore, and is often served at international expositions and global events aboard.

The ingredients for making the Hainanese chicken rice is:
1 (2-pound) chicken.
1 scallion, cut into 1 inch pieces.
4 slices fresh, peeled ginger.
6 tbsp vegetable oil or chicken oil rendered from chicken fat.
6 to 8 cloves garlic, finely chopped.
4 cups long-grain uncooked rice, washed and drained.
1 tsp fine salt
.

It cost me $4 with the egg that I additional ordered. It was worth the price as the chicken is so tender and chewy. They served the amount of correct proportion. The rice also has a special smell different from others. For a rating for this stall Hainanese Chicken Rice I will give a rating of 9/10. So those whom like Hainanese Chicken Rice I encourage come here and try it! The atmosphere here, which I can see the Singapore River which is really cool!

And on Today 25 July I went to Marina Square food court, had their Fried Black Carrot Cake which costed me $4. Chai Tao Kway-Carrot Cake is a common dish or dim sum of Teochew cuisine in Chaoshan(China), Singapore and Malaysia. It is also known as fried carrot cake or simply carrot cake in Southeast Asian countries, one of its main ingredients, which is carrot.

It is made of rice flour and white radish. In Malaysia this is often served in large rectangular slabs which are steamed and then later fried whole. In Singapore, however, it is more commonly cut into pieces and stir fried with soy sauce, eggs, garlic, spring onion nd occasionally dried shrimp. There are two variants, the 'white' version does not use sweet soy sauce and the carrot cake is fried on top of a beaten egg to form a crust, the 'black' version uses sweet soy sauce, and the egg is simply mixed in with the carrot cake.

The ingredients for making the Fried Carrot Cake is:
4 radish flour cakes.
4 tbs vegetable oil or lard.
1 tbs chopped garlic.
1 tbs red chilli paste.
1 tbs chopped chye poh (salted radish).
2 eggs.
1 tbs fish sauce.
1 stalk fresh spring onion, chopped.
5 tbs oil
.

The taste of this carrot cake its not that good I still prefer the one near my house as this store carrot cake has not much taste-tasteless. But I still like the egg part which is nicer. So those who are willing to pay a price for the egg part can come here and try it. So for a stall like this I think I will give it a rating of 6/10. Because of the atmosphere here, which I can see the Esplanade, Integrated Resort and many others scenery.

Share your memories online with anyone you want anyone you want.

Celebrating Food Fest

hello.....im gauri from 3e2 and i went to balestier hawker center situated along balestier road on 25 july 2009.it was a newly opened hawker centre and was not as crowded as i expected to be.but wow!the food was freakin delicious!!!there was a variety of indian , chinese and malay shops, and many different types of rood to choose from.

at the hawker centre i ordered two dishes.one of the dishes i ordered was mee rebus for $3.the mee rebus had a thick gravy which was not too spicy and damn tasty at the same time.the dried onions , green chilliesand bean sprouts give it a crunchy taste.the dried beancurd adds more flavour to the mee rebus.overall the mee rebus was a very tasty and healthy dish that everyone should try!!!!!:D

*i wasn't able to take a picture of the shop because the uncle did not allow me toooo...:'(

the next dish i ordered was roti prata!!!!i ordered two pratas with chicken curry for $5.the roti prata was crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside.the chicken curry was spicy and compliments with the prata.the chicken was not overcooked and the curry was not too oily.this made the chicken curry taste very nice.Overall, the roti prata tasted delicious......and i managed to take a picture of the shop....:D

Since there were no shops selling desserts,i decided to buy 'teh tarik'.it was a sweet milky
hot drink which gave a good satisfaction after eating the spicy food.having a cup of the hot teh tarik was a delightful way to end eating.

since there are many races living in singapore, shops should consider the certain aspects of different religions.for example, hindus are unable to eat beef.another example is when muslims eat halal food.i saw a signboard which says "we serve halal food".this goes to show that the aspects of certain religions are considered and not ignored.

Singapore is a multiracial country.not only chinese , malay and indians.....but also people of various religions , from different parts of the world live in Singapore.when i was eating...i took a pictuer of an american lady(actually i don no her exact race....) happily eating her mee rebus....
this tells that even though she is a westerner she enjoys the local dish...:D

So this is it, my name is Naufal of 3e2 and I went to Marina Square to accomplish my mission, to find a food that fits perfectly in the picture of this year's Racial Harmony theme: Know your Neighbours. As you might or might not know, I have taken a picture of Kaya Toast. These kaya toast are from Killiney Kopitiam.
I chose the humble Kaya Toast as an ambassador to this year's Racial Harmony theme because it came from a simple yet harmonious origin.
Kaya Toast came about from Malaysia. Kaya was a very popular jam at that time and even now it is a favourite among Malaysians and Singaporeans. So how did Singaporean taste this humble delicacy from the Malaysians? Well, back then people were poor. Usually they only eat bread and rice to fill their stomach for the whole day. Therefore, they decided to use kaya, a cocunut and sugar jam, and spread it on bread. And it turns out delicious.
They also decided to toast the bread to make it crispier and even add butter to enhance the flavour. This breakfast snack spreads throughout Malaysia fast. It makes its way to Singapore as one of the founders decide to invest on the snack on this island. It turns out to be a big hit.
This is the base origin of how kaya toast was made according to my understanding. As I munched on the crispy and sweet snack, it taste delicious. The bread was toasted to perfection allowing it to sustain its crispiness till the last bite. The sweet kaya was abundantly spread on the toast with a slice of butter which seems to melt due to the heat of the fresh toast. It is preferably served with hot tea or coffee. The meal was very light yet tasty enough to fulfill your sweet tooth. The best thing is that it only cost you $1.70 for two slice of kaya toast
Ya Kun Kaya Toast is famous for its Kaya toast and has become a household name while Killiney Kopitiam is a runner-up to the famous Ya Kun Kaya Toast. These two shops are very popular among people especially office workers. One of the reason is that they wish to get the nostalgia of the olden days where time seems slow as people takes life easy. It has since spawn many different version such as Cracker kaya toast( Biscuit kaya toast) and French Toast (Bread dip in eggs with kaya spread on it.
The significant of this dish is that it strengthen the binds of Singaporeans as everybody enjoys this dish, from the old to the young. Furthermore knowing this meals' origin is knowing our neighbours as Kaya Toast came from Malaysia and we made it famous here in our homeland Singapore. Thank you and be sure to savour this light delicacy.

Celebrating Racial Harmony

Hi, this is Kenny Kwek of 3N1 here. The above picture is actually a curry chicken noodle dish i've ordered at the marina square food court. It cost just $4.30 for a bowl of it, Its really affordable than eating in restuarants as the taste are all about the same. Taste test: the noodles are not soggy and the chicken they served are quite a few pieces and the meat are tender and juicy and lastly the curry that they served with the curry chicken noodle is not spicy although there's a mild spiciness in it. Verdict: overall on a scale of 10, i would give it a 8/10 as the price is affordable and it's also worth trying.

I am Wai Yan Hlaing of class 3E2. I went to China Town on 22 July 2009 to celebrate Singapore Food Festival and to find proper food for our Food and Nutrition assignment. I searched for delicious food in China Town and I found this Thai Stall with many delicious foods. With many attractive foods on the menu, I had some trouble choosing what to eat but I found this Pineapple Fried Rice. This cost me $10, I think it's really worth it. I had Pineapple Fried Rice for the first time, the flavors are fresh and the whole dish is surprisingly not greasy or overly sweet. It has that perfect taste of sweet-salty-spicy that many dishes do not have. It is also really pretty with all the colors from the variety of ingredients. The Pineapple Fried Rice is sweet and fruity yet savory.

I am Soo Kuan Yong of class 3E2. I went to Marina Square on 22 July 2009 for this Food and Nutrition project. I had ordered a plate of hokkien mee which cost $4. It is made up of bee hoon and yellow noodles, chives, bean sprouts, fatty pork, eggs, sotong, prawn and lime. The ingredients are added in the right proportions to make the noodles taste fantastic. To make it even better, the noodles are served on special leaves. The hokkien noodles have a very strong prawn taste with thick gravy, the lime not only gives the noodles an added flavor, it also makes it less oily to the taste buds. Those who like spicy food could also add sambal chili for better taste.
